Dollhouse Accessories - How to Make Your House Look Real - Part 2

In part 2 of 'How should I decorate a Dollhouse' we are looking at which dollhouse accessories to use to decorating your hall, your bedrooms, your nursery and the bathroom.

Just look around in your own house. What can you see in your hall, in your bedrooms and bathroom? Imagine how bare your home would look if there were only furniture. Following are some tips on how and which accessories you can use to make these areas of your house look absolutely real.

A Bathroom th Style

If you are building a period dollhouse or room box, you're decorating choices are pretty much limited by convention. There's more latitude if you're recreating an important scene from childhood, because we've all learned that memory is not a video recorder. Still, the whimsey factor can be limited.

I sketched some dollhouse ideas for the latest granddaughter. It was a Victorian beauty, just like I had at her age. Her reaction gave me joy.

“Gee, grandma! It's so old-timey. I'd rather have something I'd like to live in.”

So we perused decorating magazines, watched HGTV together, and made plans for a contemporary structure. What a dream house! She sure better become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, when she grows up.   

Guess which room we spent the most time planning? The bath … no, that's a lame description. She wants a Personal Spa in her dollhouse. Hooray! There's a fresh breeze blowing in the miniature universe. Keep the windows open!

Dollhouse Decorating - Choose Color Wisely

Your dollhouse or room box needs to follow the same decorating rules as a real house. Light colors tend to open up a room, making it seem lighter and more spacious.

Dark hues can add depth and warmth. Using a dark color on a single accent wall creates visual interest, without making the room feel smaller.

A warning about white walls and ceilings: pay special attention to how surrounding elements will reflect light and alter the color. For example, red furniture or carpeting might make white walls look pink. This is especially true in a room box, as there is mostly reflected light present.

Blue can give the room a cool feeling; it can also make it look cold. A blue wall will give a cool bluish-white cast to the whole room, as in the picture below. The reflected light gives everything in the bathroom, especially the ceiling, a bluish cast, destroying the desired contrasts.

So remember: choose color wisely.
